A rule I never explained. Five names that made him believe it anyway.

My son doesn’t take instructions well.
Tell Evaan what to do and he’ll forget by dinner. But show him the same pattern three times, across three unrelated situations, and something clicks that no instruction ever reached.
I didn’t design this. I found it by accident, on a soccer field.
The Question, Not the Answer
Before Evaan touches the ball, I ask him one thing: what happens in the next 10 seconds?
Not the whole game. Just the next ten seconds — who’s open, where the gap is, what the defender’s weight is doing.
He guesses. Often wrong. Doesn’t matter. The question is the training, not the answer.
Then chess happened, and I asked it again. Not the next twenty moves — grandmasters can’t reliably do that either. Just the immediate consequence of the piece he’s about to move.
Then a maths problem stumped him, and instead of handing him the method, I asked once more. What happens in the next 10 seconds if you try that number?
Three domains. One question, wearing three different shirts. He didn’t notice I was repeating myself.
I Told Him the Best in the World Do This
He didn’t believe me the first time, so I gave him names.
I told him Messi doesn’t out-run defenders. He reads the shape of the defence a beat before it forms and is already moving towards a gap that hasn’t opened yet. That’s the 10-second rule, played at professional speed.
I told him Viswanathan Anand — a name he now says like a password — doesn’t calculate every possible game. He recognises a configuration he’s seen before and knows, almost instantly, which handful of moves it collapses into. Compression, not brute force.
I told him Einstein ran thought experiments before he ran equations — riding alongside a beam of light in his head, watching what the next few seconds of physics would have to look like if it were true. He imagined the immediate consequence first and did the maths to confirm it afterwards.
I told him Elon Musk builds rockets the same way Evaan solves a maths problem badly on purpose — first principles, not analogy. Don’t ask what’s normally done. Ask what has to be true in the next step, from scratch, and build forward from there.
And I told him even Grok — his favourite AI, the one he asks to draw dinosaurs — is, underneath, doing a version of the same thing: predicting the next most likely token, over and over, one short step ahead, never the whole essay at once.
Five completely different worlds. One identical move.
A pattern only becomes a principle once a kid has watched it survive contact with someone he admires, in a situation that has nothing to do with the last one.
Compression, Not Genius
Here’s what nobody tells you about kids who look “gifted”. Most of it isn’t raw intelligence. It’s pattern recognition running early and often.
Chess research on grandmasters found this decades ago — experts don’t calculate more moves than beginners. They recognise configurations faster and skip straight to the branch that matters. The genius isn’t computation. It’s compression.
Evaan doesn’t know he’s compressing anything. He just knows the soccer question, the chess question and the maths question feel like the same question in different clothes — and now, apparently, so does whatever Messi, Anand, Einstein, Musk and Grok are each doing in their own field, none of them aware of the others.
First Principles, Not First Instructions
“Because I said so” teaches Evaan how to respond to that exact situation. It transfers to nothing.
“What happens in the next 10 seconds” teaches him how to think — which transfers to everything, because it was never actually about soccer.
That’s the whole difference between an instruction and a first principle. An instruction is a patch. A first principle regenerates the patch on its own, in situations you never covered, that you won’t be in the room for.
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve said “look both ways” before crossing a road. I have no idea how many times I’ve asked “what happens in the next 10 seconds” before he does anything remotely risky.
One of those numbers matters. It isn’t the first one.
The Part That Got Slightly Ridiculous
A few months ago the rule leaked into bedtime.
I make the stories up on the spot, and they’re never about the same thing twice. One night it’s something that happened at school. The next it’s a match, or a bad tackle, or a goal that shouldn’t have counted. Then it’s a video game he’s obsessed with, or King doing something idiotic with the empty egg carton, or how a rocket actually holds itself upright, or what an AI is really doing when it answers him.
Whatever the story is, I stop somewhere in the middle and ask: “Evaan’s about to open the door. What happens in the next 10 seconds?”
He predicts. Sometimes right, and grins like he’s cracked a code. Sometimes wrong, and demands a rewrite so he’s right — fair enough, he’s seven, that’s how negotiation works at that age.
The story stopped being the point months ago. School, soccer, games, physics, tech, AI, the dog — different surface every night, same question underneath. He’s rehearsing prediction and thinks he’s just getting a story.
There’s probably an app in here somewhere — bedtime stories that quietly train a kid to predict, one plot beat at a time, drawn from whatever actually happened to him that day. Filed under: later.
Strong Body, Strong Mind, Strong Pedigree
I want him physically strong. Running, falling, getting back up, playing a full match without asking to come off.
I want him mentally strong. Losing without it taking the rest of the afternoon. Sitting with a hard problem long enough for it to become an easy one.
But pedigree is the part people misunderstand. It isn’t what you’re born with. It’s the standard you’re raised inside — what gets tolerated in your house, what doesn’t, what everyone around you assumes is normal. Pedigree is a set of defaults handed down until nobody remembers being taught them.
A kid who has been asked “what happens in the next 10 seconds” ten thousand times doesn’t grow into someone who thinks ahead. He grows into someone who can’t quite imagine not doing it. That’s the whole aim.
He’s Getting There. So Am I.
None of this ends. That’s the part I underestimated.
Evaan doesn’t graduate from the rule. He just gets less wrong, situation by situation, forever — soccer this month, a harder problem next month, a friendship problem I haven’t seen coming yet.
I run the same loop on myself, aimed inward: what happens in the next 10 seconds if I hold this belief? Most of my worst decisions came from skipping that question entirely.
Messi does it with defenders. Anand does it with pieces. Einstein did it with light. Musk does it with rockets. Grok does it with the next word. My son does it with a ball, a chessboard and a bedtime story about his own dog — and none of them know they’re running the same rule.
We’re not trying to arrive anywhere. We’re both just getting less wrong, on a loop, at the same kitchen table.
Not because either of us figured it out.
Because the question got asked enough times that it stopped needing to be asked.
